Hurricane Melissa threatens catastrophic flooding in Jamaica and Haiti : NPR

Hurricane Melissa has strengthened to Category 4 and could reach Category 5 as it crawls toward Jamaica, where a hurricane warning is in effect. The slow-moving storm is forecast to reach Jamaica’s southern coast Tuesday morning, unleashing 15-30 inches of rain, with up to 40 inches in spots, and triggering catastrophic flash flooding and landslides in Jamaica and southern Hispaniola. Haiti is under a hurricane watch; at least one person has died in the Dominican Republic and three in Haiti. Jamaica activated emergency water protocols, and the U.S. Navy ordered evacuations from Guantanamo Bay as eastern Cuba braces.
