The Trump administration has reinstalled an 11-foot bronze statue of Confederate general and diplomat Albert Pike near the Capitol in Washington, the only statue honoring a Confederate in the nation’s capital. Toppled and set ablaze during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, the statue was restored by the National Park Service at President Trump’s direction, using fee revenues despite the government shutdown. Local leaders, including the office of Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, criticized the move, as Trump continues pushing to restore Confederate symbols in public spaces and the military.
