Artist Amy Sherald canceled her Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition, "Amy Sherald: American Sublime," due to a dispute over the inclusion of her painting "Trans Forming Liberty." Sherald stated that concerns about the portrait, depicting a trans woman, stemmed from institutional fear fueled by political hostility toward the trans community. The Smithsonian intended to add a video contextualizing the painting, a decision Sherald opposed. This cancellation prevents Sherald from becoming the first contemporary Black artist with a solo show at the gallery, highlighting a conflict between artistic vision and institutional pressures.
