US Imposes 17% Tomato Tariff on Mexico

The U.S. imposed a 17% tariff on most fresh Mexican tomatoes after negotiations failed. Supporters claim this will bolster the struggling domestic tomato industry, while opponents warn of higher prices for consumers. Mexico supplies roughly 70% of the U.S. tomato market. The duty follows the U.S. withdrawal from a 2019 agreement with Mexico, citing unfair trade practices. This action is separate from recent tariffs imposed on Mexican and EU products. While the U.S. Commerce Department cited pressure from U.S. growers, various business groups and governors opposed the tariff, fearing price hikes and potential retaliatory measures.
