Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, formally declared himself a Roman on Sunday, completing the ceremonial steps to become bishop of Rome. He took possession of the St. John Lateran Basilica, celebrating Mass with Roman priests and faithful. Leo emphasized his commitment to listening to and working with the Roman people, especially during the Holy Year. His declaration followed visits to other significant Roman basilicas and a warm welcome from Rome's mayor. Leo succeeded Pope Francis, who is buried at St. Mary Major.
