Elon Musk's SpaceX secured approval to establish "Starbase," a new city in South Texas, with a 212-6 vote. The move, celebrated by Musk, allows SpaceX to potentially increase launches from 5 to 25 annually. However, critics express concern over Musk's increased control, particularly regarding potential closure of Boca Chica Beach and State Park to facilitate launches. State legislature bills aim to shift authority from Cameron County to Starbase's governance, a move opposed by some local officials who believe the existing collaboration is sufficient.

NPR and PBS heads are fighting back against the Trump administration's attempt to cut their taxpayer funding. An executive order aims to block funding, citing an outdated model of government-funded news and claims of bias. Both organizations are exploring legal options, warning of devastating consequences, especially for smaller stations and children's programming. They argue their programming includes diverse viewpoints and that the administration's claims are unfounded.

Hard-right leader George Simion leads in Romania's rerun presidential election exit polls, securing around 33% of the vote and advancing to a May 18 runoff. He will face either Crin Antonescu or Nicușor Dan, both centrists. The election was rerun after the November vote was annulled due to alleged Russian interference. Simion, a pro-Trump populist, aims to bring back barred ultranationalist Călin Georgescu to a leadership position. Analysts caution that exit polls may not reflect the high number of votes cast by Romanians abroad. A cyberattack targeting government websites was thwarted.

A forthcoming book reveals that President Biden's top aides considered having him take a cognitive test to address concerns about his age and fitness for a second term. While confident he'd pass, they feared the act of taking the test would raise more questions. The discussion occurred in February 2024, before his final physical and several public missteps. The book, authored by journalists from prominent news outlets, suggests deep anxieties within the White House regarding public perception of the President's mental acuity.

Donald Trump's administration, led by Elon Musk's "Doge" efficiency department, has fired tens of thousands of federal probationary workers in its first 100 days. Many were abruptly dismissed, leading to legal challenges and court-ordered reinstatements, often followed by further dismissals. The firings have cost billions, disrupted government services, and caused widespread demoralization and anxiety among employees. While the administration claims the goal is efficiency, critics argue it's a politically motivated purge of civil servants. The impact on essential government functions, particularly scientific and technical expertise, is raising significant concerns.

Dozens of US arts organizations have had their government grant offers revoked following President Trump's proposal to eliminate federal agencies supporting arts and humanities. This includes the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The administration cites reducing government size and enhancing accountability as reasons. The cancellations sparked outrage from Democrats and arts organizations, who argue the cuts will severely limit public access to the arts. Affected organizations reported grant cancellations, impacting diverse projects and causing significant financial distress.

San Antonio's May 3rd election saw low voter turnout (7.81%), resulting in several city council races heading to a June 7th runoff. Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos will compete for mayor, while other runoffs include District 1 (Kaur/Gibbons), District 6 (Gonzalez/Galvan), District 8 (Meza Gonzalez/McGee), and District 9 (Spears/Aramburu). Districts 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 10 saw incumbent victories. A nearly $1 billion Alamo Colleges bond also passed.

A Mexican band, Los Alegres del Barranco, was denied US visas for performing a narcocorrido, a ballad about drug cartels, prompting debate about free speech and censorship. The US State Department cited glorifying a drug kingpin as the reason, a move criticized as politically motivated. While the band's US tour was cancelled and they faced investigation in Mexico, the incident boosted the band's popularity and highlighted the enduring appeal of narcocorridos, a genre with roots in 19th-century folk music. The incident also raised concerns about self-censorship among Mexican bands fearing US repercussions.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's legislative influence has waned significantly during his second-to-last session. Lawmakers defied him on immigration, initiating their own legislation after rejecting DeSantis's proposals. An investigation into the First Lady's Hope Florida initiative also yielded unfavorable results. Budget negotiations stalled, resulting in a delayed budget agreement. Even a bill addressing condo issues faced disagreements, highlighting a growing rift between DeSantis and the legislature. The session's conclusion underscores challenges for DeSantis's future political ambitions.

President Trump announced plans for a $45 million military parade in Washington D.C. on Flag Day, which also coincides with his birthday. The parade, celebrating the Army's 250th anniversary, will feature thousands of soldiers, aircraft, and military vehicles. Additionally, he revealed plans to self-fund a White House renovation, including a new ballroom and replacing the Rose Garden's grass with stone.
