US-China trade talks resumed in Geneva, with Vice-Premier He Lifeng leading the Chinese delegation. He, a close Xi Jinping confidant, is seen as a tougher negotiator than his predecessor, Liu He. While Trump claims China desires a deal, analysts are skeptical of a breakthrough, citing potential disagreements and China's willingness to endure economic pain. He Lifeng's team includes fluent English speakers, yet the talks are viewed as an initial engagement rather than a comprehensive negotiation, with the ultimate decision resting with higher-level officials.

Germany's government has denied reports that Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared a national emergency to tighten border controls. A spokesperson refuted claims that Article 72 of the EU Treaty was invoked, clarifying that no such emergency has been declared. While Interior Minister Dobrindt announced stricter border controls and increased deportations of irregular migrants, the government maintains this does not constitute a national emergency. Neighboring countries have expressed concerns about the legality and impact of these stricter measures.

FEMA's acting administrator, Cameron Hamilton, was abruptly replaced by David Richardson, a DHS official, a day after testifying against proposed FEMA dismantling. Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL, voiced concerns about FEMA's efficiency and disagreed with proposals to eliminate the agency. President Trump, who has criticized FEMA's performance, recently created a review council to reform the disaster response system. Richardson, a former Marine, lacks disaster management experience. The change sparked criticism from Rep. DeLauro, who accused Trump of firing anyone lacking blind loyalty.

Acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton was fired Thursday, a day after testifying before Congress against disbanding the agency. His testimony contradicted President Trump's and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's suggestions to downsize or eliminate FEMA. Hamilton stated that disbanding FEMA would not be in the best interest of the American people. David Richardson is now the interim FEMA administrator. This change occurs weeks before hurricane season.

Russia will restrict internet access in several regions, including Moscow, during its May 9 Victory Day celebrations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cited "dangerous neighbors" as the reason. Restrictions, already in place in some areas, coincide with intensified Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Moscow and a rejected ceasefire proposal. The move is seen as part of Russia's ongoing effort to control online information and test its 'sovereign internet' system, impacting at least 350 flights according to the Russian association of tour operators.

Donald Trump's second nominee for Surgeon General, wellness influencer Dr. Casey Means, faces immediate backlash. Means lacks a medical license and is an anti-vaxxer promoting spirituality in health. Critics, including Laura Loomer and Nicole Shanahan, question her qualifications and allege deception in the selection process. Trump, while praising Means's 'MAHA' credentials, deflects responsibility, citing Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s approval. The controversy highlights the influence of fringe figures within Trump's administration and raises concerns about the qualifications of his appointees.

President Trump urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to include tax increases on high earners and close the carried interest loophole in the Republican spending bill. This eleventh-hour request complicates negotiations as Republicans seek to offset the bill's costs, which include extending 2017 tax cuts, boosting defense and immigration funding, and raising the debt ceiling. While previously opposed, Republicans are now reconsidering raising the top tax rate to 39.6% for individuals earning over $2.5 million annually. The House Ways and Means Committee will address this next week, aiming for a pre-Memorial Day passage.

Bill Gates sharply criticized Elon Musk for actions taken during his time as head of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency. Gates accuses Musk of undermining U.S. foreign aid, specifically targeting cuts to USAID, resulting in setbacks in combating diseases like measles, HIV, and polio in impoverished nations. Gates claims these cuts have cost lives in the world's poorest countries. The criticism comes during recent interviews with The New York Times Magazine and the Financial Times.

Former President Trump announced he will replace his nominee for U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ed Martin. Martin's nomination faced significant opposition due to his past defense of January 6th rioters and controversial rhetoric. Trump cited lack of support as the reason for the change and stated a new nominee will be announced within two days. Martin's interim term expires May 20th.

President Trump withdrew his nomination of Ed Martin for U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., following widespread opposition from Senate Democrats and some Republicans. Martin, a longtime Republican activist lacking prosecutorial experience, faced controversies including his advocacy for Jan. 6 defendants, praise of an alleged Nazi sympathizer, and perceived threats in letters he sent. His actions as interim U.S. Attorney, such as firing prosecutors working on Jan. 6 cases, further fueled opposition. Trump expressed disappointment but vowed to nominate a replacement, acknowledging limited political capital to fight for Martin's confirmation. Martin's supporters decried the decision.
