The DNC's Credentials Committee recommended invalidating February's vice-chair elections, potentially unseating David Hogg and Malcolm Kenyatta. The challenge, brought by Kalyn Free, alleges the voting process unfairly favored male candidates, violating the party's gender balance requirement. The full DNC will vote on whether to hold new elections. This comes amid separate tension between Hogg and the party leadership over his plans to challenge incumbent Democrats. Hogg maintains the issue is procedural, not about wrongdoing, while Chairman Martin emphasizes fairness and integrity.

House Republicans unveiled a comprehensive tax bill on Monday, aiming to temporarily eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, curtail clean energy subsidies, and introduce child investment accounts. This marks their initial concrete tax-cutting proposal for the year, but it's already facing internal Republican opposition. Key disagreements include the proposed $30,000 limit on the state and local tax deduction, deemed insufficient by some representatives. The bill largely extends provisions from the 2017 Trump tax law, preventing a significant tax increase for many Americans if allowed to expire.

A federal judge has rejected a lawsuit by immigrant-rights groups challenging a Trump-era agreement allowing the IRS to share taxpayer data with ICE for immigration enforcement. Judge Dabney Friedrich ruled the data-sharing deal, which allows ICE to request taxpayer addresses to track down undocumented immigrants defying deportation orders, complies with existing law, as it's limited to criminal investigations. The groups plan to appeal. The agreement, implemented despite concerns from IRS officials, has raised fears within immigrant communities about data privacy.

Two men, Brian Nieves and Paul Perkins, claiming to be newly appointed Trump administration officials, attempted to enter the US Copyright Office on Monday. They presented documents stating their appointments as deputy librarian and acting director, respectively. While the Department of Justice later confirmed their appointments, the circumstances surrounding their attempted entry remain unclear. This incident follows the recent firings of the Copyright Office director, Shira Perlmutter, and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, prompting speculation about a potential connection to a recent report on AI and copyright.

The Trump administration is fighting a court order to release its plans for drastically reducing the number of federal employees. The White House argues that releasing these plans would harm its ability to retain and recruit workers, citing sensitive information within the plans. A judge temporarily halted agency RIF plans until May 23rd, impacting several agencies including the NSF and Interior Department, where layoffs were delayed. However, some firings, such as probationary employees at HHS, were not reversed. The court will hold a hearing on May 22nd to determine the long-term fate of the restraining order.

A new Council on Foreign Relations initiative, the Climate Realism Initiative, proposes a strategy to address climate change by focusing on technological advancements and geoengineering, rather than emission reductions. This approach, criticized for prioritizing national interests over global cooperation and neglecting the U.S.'s historical contribution to climate change, is deemed insufficient. The author advocates for leveraging American strengths in finance and software, coupled with market-based approaches to renewable energy deployment, as a more effective strategy. The current Trump administration's policies, characterized by deregulation and anti-climate actions, further complicate the challenge.

Two Justice Department officials, Paul Perkins and Brian Nieves, appointed by President Trump to oversee the Library of Congress, were denied entry on Monday. Nieves and Perkins arrived with a letter announcing the appointment of Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting librarian, replacing Carla Hayden who was recently fired. The Library of Congress, a legislative branch agency, lacks congressional direction on the matter. The incident follows controversy over Hayden's dismissal and Blanche's past representation of Trump. Rep. Joe Morelle is calling for an investigation into potential misuse of congressional data.

Stephen Miller, a key advisor to Donald Trump, is pushing for mass deportations, despite judicial challenges. His strategy involves aggressive interpretations of laws and potentially suspending habeas corpus, a move criticized by legal experts. This aggressive approach, using tactics like misrepresenting Supreme Court rulings and invoking the Alien Enemies Act, has led to widespread condemnation and negatively impacted Trump's approval ratings. Miller's actions raise serious constitutional concerns and highlight a potential clash between the executive and judicial branches.

The midterm elections saw a fierce rivalry between the Duterte and Marcos dynasties, with the Vice President's, Sara Duterte's, political future uncertain pending impeachment proceedings. Unexpectedly, independent candidates performed strongly, defying pre-election polls. Duterte's family maintained its stronghold in Davao, with his son elected vice-mayor and another son re-elected as congressman.

Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra announced his candidacy for governor on Monday, joining a crowded Republican primary field. This follows Gov. Kim Reynolds' decision not to seek re-election. Feenstra's entry could lead to a high-profile contest, potentially against Attorney General Brenna Bird, seen as President Trump's preferred candidate. On the Democratic side, State Auditor Rob Sand also entered the race. The Iowa gubernatorial race is considered significant, attracting national attention and potential 2028 presidential hopefuls.
