During a Senate hearing, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) clashed with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over massive agency cuts, including personnel reductions. Kennedy claimed no working scientists were fired, while Alsobrooks presented evidence contradicting this, citing hundreds, if not thousands, of scientists let go from agencies like NIH and CDC. These dismissals include scientists working on crucial research areas such as Parkinson's disease and infectious diseases. Alsobrooks and other senators intend to continue exposing what they consider to be Kennedy's misleading statements.

US President Donald Trump granted refugee status to nearly 60 Afrikaners, claiming genocide in South Africa. This claim is disputed by South Africa's government and political parties, who attribute it to misleading information and right-wing groups. While farm attacks occur, they don't constitute genocide according to South African courts. The situation involves land reform legislation, controversial songs by the EFF party, and statements by Elon Musk alleging discrimination against his Starlink service. While some Afrikaners expressed interest in relocating, many remain committed to South Africa.

Senate Republicans are pushing back against a massive House bill designed to advance President Trump's agenda, citing concerns about its impact on the budget deficit and various policy provisions. Senators from both sides have voiced objections to proposed cuts in Medicaid, clean energy funding, and other areas. The bill, which aims for deficit neutrality, faces significant opposition due to its projected $4 trillion deficit increase. Amendments are expected before the bill can pass the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow majority, leaving little room for dissent.

Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) criticized President Trump's proposed spending bill, arguing it insufficiently addresses the national deficit. Johnson stated the bill doesn't return spending to pre-pandemic levels and projects a continued rise in the national debt, reaching potentially $62 trillion within 10 years. He advocates for a return to pre-pandemic spending baselines, suggesting cuts while preserving essential programs like Social Security and Medicare. Johnson expressed reservations about the bill but stopped short of committing to opposing it.

The Pentagon announced a new policy requiring commanders to identify transgender troops and initiate medical evaluations to facilitate their removal from the military. Transgender service members have until early July to voluntarily leave, with financial incentives offered. Those who don't come forward risk being identified through routine health checks or by others. This process echoes the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' era and follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to enforce the ban on transgender service members. The policy has drawn criticism, with the Defense Secretary linking his opposition to combating 'wokeness' in the military.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has ordered all state flags to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, May 18th, in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day. The proclamation honors the sacrifice and service of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset.

The Library of Congress's longtime librarian, Carla Hayden, was abruptly fired by the Trump administration, sparking controversy. The White House cited no reason, but accusations of promoting inappropriate children's books surfaced. The appointed interim librarian, Todd Blanche, hasn't assumed his duties, leaving Robert Randolph Newlen, the principal deputy librarian, in charge. Hayden's firing, deemed potentially illegal by some, has ignited a dispute between the executive and legislative branches over the president's authority in this matter. The incident has drawn criticism from various groups.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard fired two veteran intelligence officials, Mike Collins and Maria Langan-Riekhof, due to their opposition to President Trump. This followed the release of a declassified memo contradicting the administration's justification for deporting Venezuelan immigrants. The firings, reported by Fox News Digital, sparked concern among Democrats, who questioned the lack of justification. The dismissed officials had extensive experience and held key positions within the intelligence community, including roles in preparing the President's Daily Brief. Gabbard is consolidating key intelligence operations, aiming for more direct control and investigating alleged political misuse of intelligence.

President Trump visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, his first known visit to a mosque as president. The visit, part of a larger Middle East diplomatic tour, included customary respectful gestures. Trump's visit follows previous visits by his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as former President Biden. While Trump's past rhetoric on mosques has been controversial, his recent actions suggest an attempt to mend relationships with Muslim voters, although his comments on potentially taking control of the Gaza Strip remain contentious.

President Trump concluded a Middle East trip boasting over $1 trillion in new US-Middle East deals. Key agreements include a $243.5 billion (potentially $1.2 trillion) investment pact with Qatar, encompassing military hardware and Boeing aircraft purchases. The UAE will co-build a massive AI data center, while Saudi Arabia pledged $600 billion in investments, including military contracts and AI infrastructure projects with major US tech firms. These agreements span defense, aviation, AI, and other sectors, marking a significant boost in US-Middle East economic cooperation.
