Approximately 10,000 Hungarians protested against a new bill proposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's government. The bill, likened to Russia's "foreign agent" law, would allow the government to monitor and potentially ban media and NGOs deemed threats to national sovereignty. This protest is the latest in a series against Orbán's increasingly restrictive policies targeting independent media and basic rights, including recent anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Orbán claims foreign influence motivates these organizations, while critics view the measures as repressive and aimed at solidifying his power before next year's elections.

Romania's presidential runoff saw a decisive victory for pro-EU candidate Nicusor Dan over hard-right nationalist George Simion. With nearly complete results, Dan secured 54.19% of the vote, defying pre-election polls. The high voter turnout, exceeding 64%, played a significant role in Dan's win, interpreted as a rejection of Simion's skepticism towards the EU. Dan's victory is seen as a reaffirmation of Romania's commitment to Western ties and support for Ukraine. The election follows the annulment of a previous election due to alleged irregularities.

93% of Gazans face critical food insecurity due to a 77-day Israeli blockade, prompting Senator Chris Van Hollen to accuse the US of complicity. A US-backed private aid plan is criticized by the UN for lacking impartiality. International leaders urge Israel to lift the blockade, while the WHO warns of impending famine. Despite acknowledging the starvation, President Trump hasn't pressured Israel to allow aid access, further fueling concerns.

Last-minute negotiations between the UK and EU are underway before a Monday summit. Discussions involve a potential youth mobility scheme, improved access to EU airport e-gates, and agreements on trade, security, and fishing rights. While the UK aims for pragmatic solutions focusing on jobs and stronger borders, some Conservatives criticize potential concessions as a "surrender." A deal could include UK access to a substantial EU defense fund. The talks' outcome remains uncertain, with no set deadline.

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence that Republicans will pass the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" by the end of the week, despite earlier setbacks due to internal disagreements. The bill, encompassing President Trump's agenda and featuring significant tax cuts and Medicaid cuts, faces opposition from some GOP hardliners over Medicaid work requirements' starting date. The Budget Committee will reconvene to advance the bill, with a House floor vote planned before the Memorial Day deadline. Johnson hopes the Senate won't significantly alter the legislation, aiming for passage by July 4th to address the debt limit before a potential default. He acknowledged Moody's recent credit downgrade but emphasized the bill's importance in stabilizing the U.S. economy.

Proposed Republican changes to healthcare could leave over 2 million New Yorkers without health coverage. This includes cuts to Medicaid and the Essential Plan, impacting millions currently insured. The changes involve new work requirements for Medicaid recipients and eliminating tax loopholes benefiting New York's program. While some New York Republicans express support for responsible reforms, others oppose significant cuts. The bill's future is uncertain after far-right House members stalled it, raising concerns about the potential impact on the working poor and the political ramifications.

Warsaw mayoral race results show a tighter-than-expected contest between Rafał Trzaskowski and Patryk Jaki, setting the stage for a decisive second round. Trzaskowski, despite winning the first round, acknowledged the close margin and the need for increased effort in the upcoming election. Jaki attributed his strong showing to voters resisting what he termed 'propaganda'. Political analysts predict Trzaskowski will need to broaden his appeal to win the second round.

The Trump administration's frequent defiance of court rulings is escalating tensions between the executive and judicial branches. A proposed budget bill seeks to limit courts' ability to enforce contempt findings against the government. While the administration claims compliance with most rulings, its aggressive pushback in high-profile immigration cases has raised concerns about its respect for the rule of law. Legal experts debate the potential consequences and effectiveness of various judicial responses, including contempt citations and the possibility of independent prosecutions. Public opinion strongly favors compliance with court orders.
