HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday regarding the proposed 26% budget cut to the agency. The hearing will likely revisit his controversial stances on vaccines and fluoride, following his refusal to answer related questions in previous hearings. The proposed budget drastically reduces funding for NIH, CDC, and LIHEAP. Kennedy's past promotion of misinformation about vaccines, despite over 1000 measles cases this year, is expected to be a key focus.

Ukrainian President Zelensky accused Russia of stalling truce talks by proposing unrealistic conditions, rejecting claims of imminent peace negotiations. Following separate calls with both leaders, Donald Trump announced the start of immediate truce talks. However, Russia denied any deadlines and emphasized Kyiv's need to respond to peace proposals. Zelensky engaged in diplomacy with Western allies, securing further sanctions from the EU and UK targeting Russian oil tankers and military suppliers, while Trump opposed additional sanctions.

Israel is considering recalling its delegation from Doha following stalled ceasefire negotiations with Hamas. While a lower-level team will remain for indirect talks, Prime Minister Netanyahu may pull the delegation as early as Tuesday if no progress is made. This comes despite a recent extension granted to allow more time for negotiations, influenced by US concerns. Simultaneously, Israel allowed humanitarian aid into Gaza for the first time in two months, although the Prime Minister's Office denies any connection to the recent release of an Israeli-American hostage. Hamas seeks a longer ceasefire and prisoner releases in exchange for hostages.

The Trump administration is threatening to cut federal funding from American universities promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives, citing the False Claims Act. The Department of Justice will enforce this act against institutions perceived to violate civil rights laws, including those with DEI programs deemed discriminatory or allowing practices like transgender women competing in sports. This action is part of a broader attack on diversity efforts, with numerous universities already facing investigations and funding cuts despite attempts to appease the administration. The Justice Department encourages private lawsuits under the False Claims Act, potentially leading to significant financial penalties for universities.

Spike Lee, at the Cannes Film Festival, subtly criticized Donald Trump's presidency while promoting his new film, "Highest 2 Lowest." Lee expressed concern about Trump's proposed tariffs on foreign films, noting their negative impact on the industry. Despite this, he steered clear of directly condemning social media, echoing his wife's caution. The film, starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky (who were absent from the press conference), premiered to a standing ovation and an honorary Palme d'Or for Washington. "Highest 2 Lowest" will have a theatrical release on August 22nd and stream on Apple TV+ on September 5th.

The US Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration, allowing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans. This decision overturns a lower court ruling and removes legal residency and work permits. The Supreme Court's brief order lacked reasoning, prompting criticism from lawyers representing the affected Venezuelans who called it the largest single action stripping non-citizens of immigration status in modern US history. The decision comes amidst other ongoing legal battles regarding immigration policies initiated by the Trump administration.

His involvement in this and a fraudulent pandemic-era tax break will be examined during his Tuesday confirmation hearing.
