An Ohio state court on July 9, 2026, granted a preliminary injunction to 24 men’s and women’s college basketball players challenging the NCAA’s newly adopted age-based eligibility system. Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Wagner found the NCAA’s implementation of its “five-to-play-five” model arbitrary and capricious as applied to the athletes. The ruling temporarily bars enforcement of the rule against the plaintiffs, grants them immediate eligibility for the 2026–2027 season, and permits transfers outside standard portal windows. The dispute emerged after the NCAA Division I Cabinet approved the reforms on June 23, 2026, replacing traditional redshirt rules and most waiver-based extensions.
