On Sunday morning, a semi‑truck carrying one hundred and twenty cattle overturned on I‑29 near Admiral Boulevard, scattering livestock across downtown Kansas City. Firefighters and police worked through the early afternoon to corral the animals, with KCPD reporting all cattle had been accounted for just before one p.m.
The highway near I‑29 and 71 remained closed while crews cleaned diesel spills and secured the area. Some cattle did not survive, and survivors were either in the trailer or wandering downtown, even reaching KCK.
The incident highlighted the economic impact of livestock transport, as the cattle industry consistently accounts for the largest share of U.S. agricultural cash receipts. Local businesses experienced brief disruptions, and residents witnessed a surreal scene of cows roaming streets before being safely returned to the truck.
