House holds billionaire Leon Black in contempt of Congress over Epstein investigation

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a resolution holding billionaire financier Leon Black in contempt of Congress, referring the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution. The legislative action follows Black's refusal to comply with House Oversight Committee subpoenas demanding his testimony and the surrender of nondisclosure agreements connected to its ongoing investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Bipartisan lawmakers advanced the resolution without a formal floor vote after Black failed to appear for a scheduled deposition and challenged the panel's authority in federal court. Black's legal representatives strongly condemned the congressional inquiry as an abuse of power, asserting that he possessed no awareness of Epstein's illegal actions. The panel's investigation has focused heavily on financial networks and powerful figures linked to Epstein, raising significant questions regarding accountability and congressional oversight over private citizens tied to the disgraced financier.

WHO sees ‘encouraging signs’ in Congo Ebola fight, but warns cases in one eastern region are surging

The World Health Organization reported positive developments in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, noting declining transmission rates in Ituri province. However, WHO leadership cautioned that the crisis remains a volatile threat, highlighting a sharp surge in North Kivu where weekly infections have roughly doubled over a two-week period. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the epidemic is characterized by multiple outbreaks across a vast region, emphasizing that the crisis is far from over. More than 7,200 cases and over 3,500 deaths have been recorded across seven provinces since the outbreak began. While parts of Ituri province show signs of containment and South Kivu has reported no new cases since May, the rapid escalation in North Kivu strains response efforts. Health officials continue working to enhance contact tracing, community engagement, and treatment capacity to reverse infection trajectories across the affected eastern provinces.
