Shingles cases dropping among people who got chickenpox vaccine, data shows

Recent health analysis data indicates that shingles diagnoses are declining significantly among individuals aged 34 and younger in the United States. Researchers examined electronic health records from over 85 million patients between 2019 and 2026, finding that younger generations eligible for the chickenpox vaccine as children experience lower rates of the painful blistering condition. Specifically, shingles cases among younger adults more than halved during this period. The Food and Drug Administration approved the varicella zoster vaccine in 1995, leading to widespread childhood immunization and a dramatic drop in chickenpox infections nationwide. Conversely, researchers observed that shingles rates continue to climb among older adults who contracted natural chickenpox infections in childhood, potentially due to reduced exposure to natural viral boosters from infected children. While shingles remains rare in populations under 50, health officials note that the findings point toward substantial long-term benefits from early childhood vaccination programs.
