Brian Burns convened a players-only defensive meeting early in the week, then backed it up as the Giants beat the Eagles 34-17, blanking Philadelphia after halftime. Burns logged two sacks to tie the NFL lead at seven and spearheaded a unit that produced Cor’Dale Flott’s pivotal fourth‑quarter interception. With the cornerback rotation shelved, New York stifled third downs (1-for-9) and bottled Saquon Barkley. Cam Skattebo powered the offense with 98 yards and three touchdowns behind an improving line. Afterward, a game ball went to cancer-stricken co-owner John Mara.

Detroit’s season ended in a 15-inning, 3-2 gut punch in Seattle, where manager AJ Hinch said it was an “easy decision” to pull ace Tarik Skubal after six dominant innings. Skubal allowed one run on two hits and struck out 13 — a winner-take-all record — before exiting at 99 pitches; Seattle tied it in the seventh and won on Jorge Polanco’s walk-off. Hinch, citing an emptied tank, used seven relievers who yielded two earned runs over nine innings. The Mariners advance to their first ALCS since 2001, facing the Blue Jays on Sunday at Rogers Centre.

Penn State’s slide—after a preseason No. 2 ranking and last week’s biggest upset loss to UCLA—frames a betting slate that fades the Nittany Lions. The picks: Northwestern +22.5 in a tricky spot at Beaver Stadium; Arkansas +12.5 behind an SP+ No. 12 offense and Bobby Petrino’s bye-week prep at Tennessee; and Texas A&M -7.5 over Florida, which has two wins, as the undefeated Aggies host. The column went 1-2 last week and sits 12-6 on the season.

Jennifer Choate, 27, went to a Maryland hospital with high blood pressure and possible preeclampsia, then suddenly collapsed in labor. A quick-acting nurse alerted senior staff as Choate’s heart stopped; doctors diagnosed a rare amniotic fluid embolism—seen in about 1 in 40,000 births and often fatal. She was resuscitated, her daughter delivered by C-section, and she was transferred for intensive care. After nine days, Choate went home without long-term complications, grateful her baby is healthy, and still processing the trauma with support from loved ones and the nurse who helped save her.

Darius McCrary, known for Family Matters, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol near U.S.-Mexico border in California on Sunday, Oct. 5, on felony charges and is being held in a San Diego jail, records show. Listed as a "fugitive arrest," he has not been sentenced and is not eligible for bail. His rep said he was stopped while partnering with a real estate developer building homes for the homeless in Tijuana and learned of a warrant tied to a missed child-support court date; she said COVID led to the lapse. His first hearing is set for Wednesday, Oct. 15.

U.S. stocks tumbled Friday after President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he is calculating a "massive" tariff increase on Chinese imports. The post, following Beijing’s tighter controls on rare earth exports, erased roughly $2 trillion in market value: the S&P 500 fell 2.7%, the Nasdaq 3.56%, and the Dow 879 points. Chipmakers led losses—Nvidia down 5%, AMD nearly 8%—as 424 S&P names finished lower. After the bell, Trump threatened 100% tariffs and new export controls on critical software, deepening jitters ahead of a planned Xi meeting that now appears in doubt.

With October 14 looming, Windows 10 users are advised to enroll in Microsoft’s free Extended Security Updates program to keep patches seamless; most won’t feel changes for about a month unless an emergency update lands. Enrollment stays open until October 14, 2026, installing any missed fixes, though devices remain more vulnerable until they join. Upgrading to Windows 11 is still possible for eligible PCs. Kaspersky warns that Windows 11’s requirement for a Microsoft account during setup raises privacy questions, while PIRG notes nearly 40% still run Windows 10, risking a widening digital divide.

France’s reappointed prime minister, Sebastien Lecornu, conceded there were “not a lot of candidates” for the post and hinted his tenure could be short amid deep divisions. Renamed by President Emmanuel Macron after a week of political chaos, he urged parties to help craft a budget before looming deadlines. Lecornu said he returned after resigning Monday because of urgent financial needs, but will stay only if conditions are met, acknowledging the risk of a no-confidence vote. The move drew fire across the spectrum as France faces ballooning debt, political paralysis and rising poverty worrying EU partners.

On day 10 of the shutdown, a fight over Affordable Care Act premium subsidies has hardened into stalemate. Republicans back a temporary spending bill that omits the expiring, pandemic-era enhancements to the tax credits, with Speaker Mike Johnson calling the Dec. 31 deadline distant; Democrats push to extend - and make permanent - the aid as open enrollment begins Nov. 1. Experts warn millions could face higher costs if subsidies aren't loaded into systems; KFF estimates assisted enrollees' premiums could more than double in 2026. Disputed negotiations and partisan blame left the standoff unresolved.

Apple’s headset roadmap is reportedly on ice as the company pivots to smart glasses. After lukewarm reception to 2024’s Vision Pro, plans for a cheaper Vision Air and a redesigned Vision Pro 2 slipped and were then paused, with production of the first model winding down amid weak demand, according to supply-chain and media reports. Bloomberg says Apple has halted the Air to accelerate glasses. In the interim, Apple is expected to refresh the existing headset with an M5 chip, possible R2 coprocessor, and new Dual Knit headband, with FCC filings hinting at an imminent launch.
