Tommy Edman’s tiebreaking single in the sixth lifted the Dodgers past the Brewers 3-1 in Los Angeles, pushing them to a 3-0 NLCS lead and within a win of becoming the first defending champion to reach the World Series since 2009. Shohei Ohtani tripled to spark an early run before Jake Bauers tied it. Tyler Glasnow struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings, and a wild pickoff by Abner Uribe added insurance. Hard-throwing rookie Jacob Misiorowski fanned nine. Roki Sasaki closed a four-hitter for his third save. Game 4 is Friday; only one MLB team has overcome 3-0.

A 68-yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers to Pat Freiermuth late in a Thursday night loss to the Cincinnati Bengals briefly lifted spirits, until a celebratory hug from 311‑pound Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones knocked the 41‑year‑old quarterback to the ground. Rodgers stayed down momentarily, then rose and gave Jones a quick two‑handed shove to the chest while appearing to say, “Get off of me.” The moment followed Rodgers’ usual one‑hop fist‑pump celebration and cooled quickly as teammates and coaches greeted him.

Early in Thursday night’s loss to the Bengals, a handoff-and-pitch sequence unraveled for the Steelers. Aaron Rodgers gave the ball to Jaylen Warren, got it back, found no receiver open, and threw it away, then yelled at Warren. The confusion persisted afterward. Rodgers said the call was not a flea flicker—“We weren’t on the same page.” Coach Mike Tomlin said, “It was.” The clash points to a breakdown between the play called into Rodgers’ helmet and what was executed on the field, with no further explanation from the team.

After receiving a $4 million NSF grant in 2019 to explore "mirror cells," University of Minnesota synthetic biologist Kate Adamala came to fear the work’s implications. A 38-member group’s 300-page analysis, summarized in Science in December 2024, warned that mirror-organism bacteria could arrive within 10–30 years and evade immune defenses and antibiotics, with potentially devastating spread. Meetings now seek red lines: many oppose creating living mirror cells, while others urge caution not to hinder beneficial mirror molecules. Adamala halted her project; nearly 100 stakeholders in February 2025 urged against creating mirror life absent compelling safety evidence.

An immense storm surge from Typhoon Halong’s remnants battered western Alaska’s coastal villages, floating houses and pushing water more than six feet above normal tides. In Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, 121 homes were destroyed and three dozen more drifted away; one person is dead and two are missing. More than 1,000 residents were airlifted to Bethel and Anchorage on military planes as shelters swelled to about 1,500 people. Officials called it one of Alaska’s largest disasters. Gov. Mike Dunleavy requested a federal disaster declaration. Amid fuel spills and lost winter food stores, evacuees shared cots, gratitude, and resolve.

As respiratory virus season returns in the U.S., the CDC's annual outlook expects peak hospitalizations from COVID-19, flu and RSV to mirror last season. Public health experts urge vaccination. The CDC has shifted COVID-19 shots to individual, provider-guided decisions, though most people who opt in will need just one dose. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. RSV shots are advised for adults 75+, and for those 50-74 at higher risk; pregnant patients at 32-36 weeks are urged to vaccinate to protect newborns, with monoclonal antibodies available for infants if maternal vaccination didn't occur.

The S&P 500 is up roughly 13% year to date through Oct. 13, rebounding more than 20% since an April pullback following President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs. If momentum holds, 2025 could deliver a third straight double‑digit rise—an uncommon streak seen only in the 1920s, 1930s, 1950s, and 1990s. Today’s rally leans on AI—semiconductors, data centers, and cloud—stirring both optimism and bubble fears. The outlook is uncertain, but the article’s core lesson endures: own quality companies, ride out volatility, and remember the S&P 500’s roughly 7% real long‑term returns and resilience.

Enzo Maresca said Chelsea forward Cole Palmer will be out for six more weeks with a groin injury, reversing earlier hopes of a quicker return. Palmer, who left after 21 minutes in last month’s loss at Manchester United, has made just two starts this season. Maresca praised his importance and said replacements will vary by game. Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández are doubts to face Nottingham Forest, while Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana and Andrey Santos are set to return. Teenager Estêvão is an option after his stoppage-time winner against the champions.

Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco said Thursday night's 33-31 win over the Steelers, and the chance to throw to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, is what motivates him to keep playing into his 40s. He called the down-to-the-wire finish "a lot of fun," noting how defenses must account for both receivers. Chase made 16 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown; Higgins had six for 96 and a score, and slid instead of scoring late so Cincinnati could drain the clock before the game-winning field goal.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama, known for his 1995 apology to Asian victims of Japan's wartime aggression, died Friday at 101 in a hospital in his hometown of Oita, party leader Mizuho Fukushima said. The ex-Japan Socialist Party chief led a coalition from 1994 to 1996, faced the Kobe earthquake and Tokyo subway gas attack, and was criticized for slow responses before resigning early the next year. In retirement, he challenged nationalist efforts to dilute wartime remorse and urged honest acknowledgment of abuses and closer ties with China.
