From viral politics to quiet generosity, the day's news spanned sharp contrasts. In San Diego, a lone Trump supporter pedaled through a No Kings rally as a protester trailed him with "Yakety Sax." Taylor Swift donated $100,000 to help 18-month-old Lilah's cancer care, pushing a GoFundMe past $219,000. George Santos rejoined Cameo after Donald Trump commuted his 87-month sentence. Florida reported an 81 percent surge in whooping cough cases between 2024 and 2025. Actor Rockmond Dunbar lost his vaccine-mandate lawsuit, and actress Samantha Eggar died at 86 after a five-year illness.

A US Marines 250th-anniversary celebration will close a 17-mile stretch of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton from 11am to 3pm Saturday as 155mm live rounds are fired over the area, the CHP said. The Marines plan a live-fire amphibious showcase at Red Beach and say the event follows safety protocols. California governor Gavin Newsom blasted the plan as dangerous and politically intimidating, while Caltrans said the White House-directed event required the shutdown for public safety. JD Vance and defense secretary Pete Hegseth will speak. A Vance spokesperson called the concern misleading and said the activity is routine training.

In Kansas City, volunteers led by Leann Villaluz are racing door to door to force a statewide vote on Missouri’s newly enacted congressional map, which targets Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II’s Kansas City seat and would divide the city into three Republican-leaning districts. People Not Politicians Missouri says it has collected over 100,000 of the 106,000-plus signatures needed by Dec. 11; success would pause the map until voters decide. The push faces lawsuits from the attorney general and challenges from the secretary of state, even as the DNC lends support and some Republicans break ranks over mid‑decade redistricting.

Eleven members of the Abu Shaaban family were killed when a bus was struck in Gaza City's Zeitoun area, according to Gaza's Hamas-run civil defence, which said they were trying to check their home. The Israeli military said troops fired on a suspicious vehicle that crossed a yellow demarcation line and continued to approach despite warning shots. The incident is the deadliest involving Israeli soldiers in Gaza since the ceasefire began eight days ago. Separately, Hamas returned the body of Israeli hostage Eliyahu Margalit, while Israel handed 15 Palestinian bodies to Gaza via the Red Cross.

James Franklin, fired by Penn State after three straight losses, said on College GameDay his national-title goal remains unchanged — he plans to win one elsewhere. Shocked by the decision, he told his family, then held an emotional team meeting. In his 12th season with $49 million left, Franklin noted the Nittany Lions opened No. 2 and were a two-minute drive from a national championship chance, after CFP wins over SMU and Boise State before a 27-24 semifinal loss to Notre Dame. Penn State elevated Terry Smith; QB Drew Allar is out after season-ending ankle surgery.

AP Top 25 drama hit early: unranked Louisville stunned No. 2 Miami 24-21, intercepting four Carson Beck passes, and Minnesota beat No. 25 Nebraska 24-6. The spotlight shifts to the SEC, with the lone top-10 showdown—No. 5 Mississippi at No. 9 Georgia, where the Rebels haven’t won since 1996—plus LSU at Vanderbilt and Tennessee at Alabama. Elsewhere, USC visits Notre Dame for the jeweled Shillelagh, and Utah meets BYU as a Big 12 rivalry tilt. Washington at Michigan could push the winner into Sunday’s rankings.

A week into the Gaza ceasefire, tens of thousands streamed north to Gaza City only to find neighborhoods razed and lives in pieces. Families like Suhair al‑Absi’s returned to rubble, debating whether to camp amid shattered homes or go back south in search of food and water. In Shuja’iya, Susan al‑Shayah could not salvage a single keepsake. Water remains scarce: a damaged pumping station awaits parts and the north’s desalination plant was destroyed. In Jabaliya, Hany Abed‑Rabou found four family houses flattened, as aid convoys and tent supplies falter.

CNN Business Nightcap examines swelling AI-market exuberance amid doubts. The Financial Times says 10 unprofitable AI startups added nearly $1 trillion in value over 12 months. Researcher Julien Garran of MacroStrategy Partnership calls it “the biggest and most dangerous bubble,” arguing LLM-based products can’t be commercial, hit scaling limits, and haven’t advanced much since ChatGPT-4. He says Nvidia profits while much of the ecosystem loses money, VC appetite is fading, and funding is narrowing to SoftBank and some foreign states. He sees a top drawing closer, yet allows he could be early—or upended by superintelligence.

At 27, Ohio hospital worker Marissa Coreno found an armpit lump and, after an ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy, learned she had Stage II breast cancer that had reached her lymph nodes. As physicians note rising diagnoses among women under 50, Coreno endured months of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, reconstruction and radiation, then began decade-long hormone therapy that induced menopause at 28. Now cancer-free, she married Anthony in August 2024 after the couple connected during treatment, and urges others to speak up about symptoms, saying there is "light at the end of the tunnel."

The article reflects on Sierra’s The Colonel’s Bequest, a parser-driven Laura Bow mystery set in a Southern mansion, lauding its NPC schedules, multiple endings, and gentler puzzles. It became a family touchstone, with mother and child swapping chairs across repeat runs to unearth fresh secrets. Though less celebrated than other adventure classics—and sometimes faulted for its passive pace—the game persists: it’s on GOG, it inspired Julia Minamata’s The Crimson Diamond, and creators Roberta and Ken Williams recently released a 3D remake of Colossal Cave.
