Week 9 delivered dramatic finishes: Bears’ last-second 58-yard TD by Colston Loveland from Caleb Williams to win 47-42 at Bengals after Joe Flacco-led rally and onside kick; Bills beat Chiefs 28-21 behind Josh Allen’s near-perfect day; Vikings edged Lions 27-24 as J.J. McCarthy converted a clutch third down; Washington’s Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow in a 38-14 loss to Seattle; Jaguars’ Cam Little drilled a record 68-yarder in a 30-29 OT win; last-second FGs lifted Panthers and Broncos, while a missed PAT doomed the Falcons.

After months of President Trump asserting federal power, Tuesday’s elections will test Democratic momentum amid a record-long government shutdown. Governor races in New Jersey and Virginia lead the slate; in Virginia, Abigail Spanberger is favored over Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, while New Jersey pits Democrat Mikie Sherrill against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. New York City’s mayoral contest features Zohran Mamdani, polling ahead, against Andrew Cuomo. With affordability central and tariffs shaping the economy, Trump’s Justice Department plans to monitor polling sites in California and New Jersey, a move Gov. Gavin Newsom decries, as Virginia’s attorney general race turns combative.

A famed Memento Mori mosaic from a Pompeii house-shop, excavated in 1874 and now in Naples, centers on a skull, with a level and plumb bob, butterfly, and a wheel likely symbolizing fortune, flanked by emblems of wealth and poverty in perfect balance. The museum says it warned the owner that rich or poor, all meet death. Found in the triclinium of a home converted into the city’s only tannery, likely owned by M. Vesonius Primus, the piece echoes Europe’s later skull art. Vesonius likely escaped in 79, but his chained guard dog perished.

Patrick Mahomes endured his worst outing of the season in Buffalo, completing 15 of 34 passes — the first sub-50 percent game of his NFL career — as the Chiefs fell 28-21. Under heavy pressure, he went 3 of 16 with an interception, a major factor in a loss that marked Kansas City’s fourth one-score defeat. Afterward, Mahomes urged consistency, saying the bye week must turn hard lessons into steadier play for the final eight games. The uphill push resumes against the 7-2 Broncos amid a three-way AFC West race with the Chargers.

Jennifer Aniston confirmed her relationship with Jim Curtis, sharing a hugging photo and the caption 'Happy birthday my love. Cherished' on Instagram Sunday. The pair had been linked for months—Curtis attended the September premiere of The Morning Show—but neither had commented publicly until now. Curtis, a well-known mental health guru with 677,000 Instagram followers, describes himself as an author, speaker, Hypno-coach and educator. The post, Aniston’s first public relationship since her 2018 split from Justin Theroux, drew excited reactions from fans and stars, including heart emojis and Amy Schumer’s 'Beautiful couple. Healing kind angels.'

Israel on Monday returned 45 Palestinian bodies to Gaza, officials said, a day after Hamas handed over the remains of three Israeli soldiers under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Since the Oct. 10 truce, militants have released 20 hostages’ remains and Israel has returned 270 Palestinian bodies. Gaza’s Health Ministry says only about 75 have been identified amid limited DNA capacity. The soldiers were named as Capt. Omer Neutra, Staff Sgt. Oz Daniel and Col. Assaf Hamami. Separately, Israel arrested two former military legal officials, amid an aid push and plans for a child vaccination campaign in Gaza.

An unpredictable NFL Sunday delivered upsets and wild finishes. The Panthers shocked the Packers 16-13, the Steelers stifled the Colts 27-20, and the Vikings edged the Lions. The day’s showstopper: Chicago 47, Cincinnati 42, sealed after Joe Flacco’s rapid rally and Caleb Williams’ 58-yard strike to rookie Colston Loveland, prompting first-year coach Ben Johnson’s no-apologies message. Buffalo beat Kansas City 28-21 as a swarming Bills defense cooled Patrick Mahomes. Seattle rolled Washington, Denver and New England stretched win streaks, the Jaguars won in OT as Cam Little hit a record 68-yarder, and the Rams stayed hot.

The Trump administration is planning a secretive mission to send U.S. troops and intelligence officers into Mexico to target drug cartels, officials said. Early training has begun, but deployment isn’t imminent as scope debates continue. JSOC troops under Title 50 with CIA help would rely on drone strikes, some requiring operators on the ground. The move would break with past practice and remain secret. The U.S. seeks coordination with Mexico but may act without it; President Claudia Sheinbaum rejects intervention. Discussions are ongoing and no final decision has been made.

After a bye week, Lions coach Dan Campbell said Detroit looked unprepared in a 27-24 loss to the Vikings and put the blame squarely on himself. He lamented 'critical errors' across all phases, calling it one of the team’s worst games in a long time, with players appearing rusty and out of sync. The Lions are 5-3, with more losses than all of last season, but Campbell voiced confidence in a turnaround. 'I’ve got to clean some stuff up, and we will,' he said.

Akita’s dazzling kanto festival masks a harsher reality: rigid gender roles pushing young women from rural Japan. Government data show Akita has Japan’s oldest population — 39% over 65 — and its lowest birth rate, while a survey finds 27% of young women want to leave their hometowns, versus 15% of men. Matchmaking schemes persist, but critics say they miss the point. Activist Ren Yamamoto told then Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba that policy overlooks women’s choices. Even as Sanae Takaichi becomes Japan’s first female prime minister, locals describe slow progress, gnawing unease and a depopulation that feels relentless.
