NASA's website is offline due to a government shutdown, hindering updates on the mysterious interstellar object 3I/ATLAS. While Mars probes like Mars Express and ExoMars are poised to capture close-up data of the object passing Mars, NASA's silence leaves scientists eager for answers about its unusual composition and trajectory. Experts debate whether it's an alien artifact or a unique comet, with new observations expected to shed light.

The San Francisco 49ers will start Mac Jones at quarterback again on Thursday Night Football against the Rams, marking his third start of the season. Brock Purdy is sidelined due to a flare-up of a toe injury sustained earlier, with the team considering him week-to-week. The White House has proposed a "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" to nine U.S. universities, offering preferred access to federal funding in exchange for adhering to specific priorities. These include a five-year tuition freeze, restrictions on international student numbers, and a commitment to ban the use of sex and gender in admissions. Universities are also asked to eliminate institutional units that "punish conservative ideas." Failure to comply could jeopardize federal funding, though the administration states funding is not solely contingent on agreement.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune labeled the ongoing government shutdown "stupid," asserting that negotiations with Democrats are unlikely to yield results. He urged Democrats to vote for a short-term funding bill to reopen the government. The shutdown, the first in six years, stems from disagreements over Affordable Care Act subsidies. Democrats demand their inclusion, while Republicans insist on reopening the government first. Both parties are set to vote on dueling proposals Friday, with a potential weekend extension of the shutdown if neither passes.

Two senior prosecutors in Virginia's Eastern District, Maya Song and Michael Ben'Ary, have been fired shortly after President Trump replaced the U.S. Attorney. Ben'Ary was involved in a high-profile terror case, while Song was a high-ranking official. The firings follow controversy surrounding the charging of former FBI Director James Comey, with staff reportedly disagreeing with the decision. Critics suggest loyalty, not competence, is now a key factor in leadership decisions at the Justice Department.

The series winner advances to face Toronto in the AL Division Series, with first pitch set for 8:08 p.m. ET.

A new study reveals AI can bypass biosecurity measures used by DNA manufacturers, allowing potential misuse of dangerous genetic material. Researchers demonstrated AI protein-design tools could 'paraphrase' toxic gene codes, evading existing safety screens. While a fix was implemented, it's not foolproof. This highlights growing concerns about AI's role in creating biothreats, prompting scientists to restrict data sharing and develop new risk management models for sensitive research.

Elon Musk is urging his millions of followers to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, citing "woke bias" and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters. Musk has repeatedly posted calls to cancel, targeting shows like "Dead End: Paranormal Park" for its transgender representation. He claims the content is "pushing pro-transgender on CHILDREN." The voice actor for Barney in "Dead End" defended the show, stating it has "saved lives." Musk's actions have drawn criticism, especially given his own transgender daughter, Vivian, who has publicly distanced herself from him.

Google is enhancing its AI coding agent, Jules, by launching a command-line interface (CLI) and a public API. This integration allows Jules to seamlessly connect with developer terminals, CI/CD systems, and tools like Slack, aiming to reduce context switching and accelerate software development. While distinct from Gemini CLI, Jules is designed for scoped tasks and operates more independently after initial approval. The updates also include memory features and potential integrations beyond GitHub, underscoring Google's push for AI-assisted coding.
