Brazilian President Lula da Silva urged US President Donald Trump to remove import tariffs and sanctions during a "friendly" video call. The two leaders established a direct communication channel, exchanging phone numbers. The discussion focused on economic and trade relations, aiming to restore a "friendly 201-year relationship." Lula also expressed hope for future in-person meetings and reiterated an invitation for Trump to attend the Cop30 climate summit. The call signals a potential easing of tensions after months of friction over the Bolsonaro trial.

The U.S. federal government has shut down after lawmakers failed to pass a funding bill, impacting non-essential services and leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees and military members working without pay. The shutdown stems from partisan disagreements over the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Potential resolutions include Democrats conceding, Republicans facing public pressure, or a temporary deal. Essential services like Social Security, Medicare, and the postal service continue, but programs like WIC face short-term funding issues. National Parks remain accessible but with limited services, while air traffic controllers and TSA staff are working without pay.

Mobile devices will continue to dominate online spending, while buy now, pay later services and social media advertising will also play crucial roles in boosting sales across categories like electronics, apparel, and furniture.

Pete Carroll's tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders is off to a dismal start, with the team sitting at 1-4 after a 40-6 blowout loss to the Colts. Despite preseason expectations of "winning a ton," multiple double-digit losses and a struggling offense, particularly quarterback Geno Smith, have left Carroll disappointed. He acknowledges the team's work ethic but admits the results are not showing. The Raiders are facing an uphill battle for the postseason.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed ongoing "technical talks" regarding a ceasefire and hostage release, with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner involved. President Trump desires a ceasefire and hostage release, with discussions focused on ensuring optimal conditions. Leavitt also criticized a judge's ruling against deploying the National Guard to Portland, calling the judge "untethered in reality." Regarding the government shutdown, she stated no federal employees have been laid off yet, but warned of potential layoffs if it persists, noting thousands of furloughed workers.

Amazon's latest Echo Show devices are marketed as seamlessly blending into the background, with Alexa aiming to assist without distraction. However, the author argues this promise is broken by intrusive, un-skippable advertisements that appear on the home screen and photo carousel. Despite claims of ads always being present, user complaints and the author's experience suggest an increase in their prominence and intrusiveness, with no option to disable them. This contradicts Amazon's stated goal of creating unobtrusive AI technology, leading the author to deem the device too distracting.

Online holiday spending in the U.S. is projected to increase by 5.3% to $253.4 billion, driven by consumer demand for discounts and the growing use of AI chatbots. While this represents growth, it is slower than the previous year and below the 10-year average. Adobe's report indicates consumers are motivated by sales and a desire to acquire needed goods despite economic uncertainties. Mobile shopping and AI-powered research are expected to significantly influence purchasing decisions.

The CDC has updated its COVID-19 vaccine guidance, now recommending shots for individuals 65 and older only after consulting a doctor or pharmacist. This marks a shift from previous broad recommendations and follows internal changes at the CDC, raising concerns about accessibility. While not outright barring vaccination for others, the "shared clinical decision-making" approach adds a barrier, leading to a fragmented national vaccination landscape as states implement varying policies, potentially causing confusion and leaving some vulnerable.
