Lost in Margaritaville: The Messy Drama Over Jimmy Buffett’s $275 Million Trust

The legal battle over late singer Jimmy Buffett’s $275 million estate escalated following disputes between co-trustees Jane Slagsvol, Buffett’s widow, and Richard Mozenter, his longtime business manager. Buffett passed away in September 2023, leaving behind an estate plan featuring a marital trust designed to provide lifetime income to Slagsvol before passing assets to their three children. The estate includes an $85.3 million equity stake in Margaritaville Holdings, multi-state real estate properties, aircraft holdings, and investments. Clashing management styles led to dueling lawsuits filed in Florida and California courts. Slagsvol filed to remove Mozenter as co-trustee, alleging hostility, withholding of financial information, and excessively low income projections relative to high management fees. Mozenter countered with petitions to remove Slagsvol, claiming she interfered with administrative duties. Courts subsequently ordered the parties into mediation and permitted trust funds to cover legal expenses, drawing further appeals from Slagsvol’s legal team over asset depletion.
