Sept. 11 ranks among the most historic events in many Americans’ lifetimes, polling shows

PUBLISHED Sep 10, 2026, 12:06 PM ET

Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, polling shows the tragedy remains deeply embedded in the American consciousness as one of the most historic occurrences in modern lifetimes. According to a new Ipsos poll, about half of United States adults unprompted name the event when asked about major historic occurrences, despite intervening milestones like the COVID-19 pandemic and high-profile presidential elections. While the vast majority of citizens retain vivid memories of where they heard about the catastrophe and two-thirds believe it impacted the country significantly, only about one in ten adults plans to publicly mark the milestone anniversary. Gallup data similarly indicates that roughly thirty percent of adults permanently altered their daily lives due to the attacks. Experts note that while collective memory remains exceptionally strong across generations, public commemoration has largely evolved from organized public rituals into quiet, personal reflection nationwide.
