A devastating fire swept through two adjacent schools in Bukavu, eastern Congo, on Thursday, killing at least 26 students and injuring dozens more. The South Kivu provincial government reported that the dead included 19 girls and seven boys, warning that the total death toll could rise further. The blaze reportedly started in a nearby residential building before spreading rapidly through the densely populated neighborhood, where homes are predominantly constructed of wood. Students at the Furaha secondary school and Ujamaa primary school faced harrowing evacuation conditions due to narrow exits, leading to severe crowding, panic, and trampling. Local medical facilities, such as the Nyamulagira BDOM health center, struggled to manage the overwhelming influx of injured minors arriving in school uniforms.
