Google to invest $15 billion in AI infrastructure and buy nuclear power in Finland

PUBLISHED Sep 9, 2026, 3:43 PM ET

Alphabet subsidiary Google announced a major fifteen billion dollar investment to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure across Finland over the next two years. The capital expenditure involves constructing three new data centers in the country's northern region to leverage naturally cold ambient temperatures for efficient server cooling. As part of the expansion, Google secured a twenty-two year power purchase agreement with Finnish utility Fortum to acquire up to fifty percent of the energy output from the Loviisa nuclear plant. Company executives highlighted that the arrangement provides stable, low-carbon baseload electricity to power core digital services including Gemini and Search. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the commitment, noting that domestic electricity production remains sufficient and stable. The development marks Google's first international nuclear energy procurement deal outside the United States, reflecting a broader industry push among major technology corporations to secure direct zero-carbon energy sources for surging artificial intelligence computing demands.
