Trump Moves to Strip Gray Wolves of Endangered Species Protections
PUBLISHED Sep 8, 2026, 12:22 PM ET
President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to review federal protections for gray and Mexican wolves under the Endangered Species Act within ninety days. The directive aims to evaluate whether wolf populations have met recovery criteria to allow delisting or downlisting. The administration cited a seventy-five year low in U.S. cattle inventories and rising beef demand as justification, responding to livestock producers who argue predators threaten their livelihoods. During the Oval Office signing, Trump questioned whether shooting wolves became immediately permissible, prompting Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to clarify that the secretary must complete the review process first. Conservation organizations condemned the action, warning it threatens decades of recovery progress, particularly for Mexican wolves which number around 319 in the wild. Environmental groups successfully overturned a prior 2020 delisting in federal court in 2022 and pledged immediate legal challenges against the new order.
