LIV Golf Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection Amid Saudi Funding Withdrawal

PUBLISHED Sep 8, 2026, 7:38 PM ET

LIV Golf has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, citing liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion. The filing follows the decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to halt its financial backing after the conclusion of the 2026 season, ending a multi-year investment period that exceeded $5 billion. To sustain operations through the court-supervised restructuring, the sovereign wealth fund agreed to provide a $49.6 million debtor-in-possession financing loan. LIV Golf entered into a restructuring support agreement with private equity firm BC Partners Credit to establish a reorganized league for early 2027 featuring a player-first ownership model. Court documents show several top professional golfers among the unsecured creditors, with individual claims ranging between $2 million and $7.4 million for third-quarter obligations. David Orlofsky of AlixPartners has been appointed as chief restructuring officer to oversee the proceedings.
