Merz to skip Macron’s space summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled his scheduled appearance at a high-profile space summit in Paris hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Officials cited an intensive legislative agenda and urgent domestic political fallout following his party's defeat in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. Merz is instead scheduled to meet European Council President Antonio Costa and address the Bundestag, alongside meetings with foreign dignitaries. The high-level international gathering has also faced disruption after American aerospace firms, including SpaceX, withdrew following pressure from Washington. Despite the German leader's absence, diplomats confirmed that Berlin will maintain its co-chair role for the conference. Several high-ranking German cabinet ministers and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remain slated to deliver addresses. The summit aims to align European aerospace strategies amid shifting transatlantic partnerships and mounting political pressures across member states.
