Tech explores Argentina's Patagonia for mega data centers

Technology investors are increasingly exploring Argentina's Patagonia region as a viable location for mega data centers, driven by abundant renewable energy, shale gas reserves, cool ambient temperatures, and vast tracts of land. As hyperscalers face mounting regulatory pushback, high energy costs, and grid strains in the United States, foreign developers are encountering minimal domestic backlash within Argentina. The shift comes amid a stabilizing macroeconomic environment under President Javier Milei, whose administration has enacted investment incentives like the RIGI regime to attract foreign capital. Major electricity generator Pampa Energia is currently evaluating a thermal-power-backed facility in Neuquen, while projects involving partnerships like OpenAI and Sur Energy have also emerged. Although regional neighbors such as Chile and Uruguay have previously advanced large-scale server infrastructure, Argentina's vast power potential and emerging fiber-optic connectivity are drawing renewed international interest despite potential local and Indigenous community concerns.
