Italy logs hottest summer for more than 75 years, institute says

Italy experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1950, with an average seasonal temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius, according to the National Research Council's Institute for BioEconomy. August emerged as the warmest month, recording a monthly average of 25.6 degrees Celsius, which significantly exceeded long-term climate norms by 3.5 degrees Celsius. Researchers noted that consecutive record-breaking months in July and August pushed 2026 on track to become the country's warmest year overall. Agricultural regions, particularly in northwestern lowlands and along the Apennines, faced severe pressure from accompanying drought conditions and high temperatures. Major urban centers including Rome, Florence, and Turin endured repeated heatwave cycles throughout the season. The extreme heat was part of a broader continental pattern affecting Europe, where other nations such as Britain similarly reported record-breaking summer temperatures and escalating environmental strains.
