F1 leader Kimi Antonelli wins Italian GP after epic charge from the back
PUBLISHED Sep 6, 2026, 1:30 PM ET
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured a historic victory at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, charging from 19th on the starting grid to claim his seventh win of the season. Following a power unit penalty that forced a deep starting position, the 20-year-old Italian navigated a high-speed recovery at Monza in fewer than 17 laps. A strategic pit stop under a virtual safety car on lap 29 allowed Antonelli to utilize fresh tires and overtake teammate George Russell with three laps remaining, extending his championship lead to 66 points. The triumph marks the second-deepest grid comeback to win a Formula 1 race and makes Antonelli the first Italian driver to win at Monza in 60 years. Ferrari endured a difficult home outing after Charles Leclerc crashed out early, while Max Verstappen claimed third place ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
