Trump's approval drops among Republicans ahead of midterms, new poll shows

PUBLISHED Sep 6, 2026, 11:12 AM ET

President Donald Trump faces sliding public support as a new Financial Times and Focaldata survey records his overall approval rating dropping to thirty-three percent among registered voters. The poll indicates Republican approval has slipped to seventy-two percent, while confidence in his handling of the economy fell to fifty-three percent within the party. Nearly two-thirds of surveyed voters believe the economy is heading in the wrong direction, and fifty-six percent disapprove of a fifty percent tariff on Canadian goods due to inflation concerns. Consequently, Democrats have widened their generic ballot lead to roughly seven and a half points ahead of the midterm elections. Furthermore, forty-six percent of respondents believe President Trump's active campaign presence creates hurdles for Republican congressional candidates. The findings underscore significant voter anxiety regarding personal finances, trade policies, and congressional control as both political parties prepare for upcoming legislative elections nationwide.
