Avalanche hits glacier on China's Muztagh Ata in Xinjiang, state media says
PUBLISHED Sep 6, 2026, 8:19 AM ET
An avalanche recently struck Glacier No. 2 on Muztagh Ata, located near China's border with Tajikistan in the northwestern Xinjiang region, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Multiple tourists captured footage of the event, which showed a wall of snow and ice cascading down the mountainside and forming a snow cloud over 100 meters wide. Authorities confirmed there were no casualties or property damage because the avalanche occurred in an unpopulated area far from major roads. The main peak of Muztagh Ata rises 7,546 meters and features extensive ice cover. Glacier No. 2 remains strictly closed to the public due to heightened risks of glacial activity. Prior to the incident, the local culture and tourism bureau warned visitors to avoid unauthorized high-risk restricted zones, citing complex terrain, volatile weather, weak communication signals, and extremely poor rescue conditions in the remote mountain environment.
