WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to retire in December after transformative and tumultuous tenure
PUBLISHED Sep 4, 2026, 12:31 PM ET
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will retire at the end of 2026, ending a seven-year tenure marked by unprecedented league growth and disputes with players. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the decision Friday, saying Engelbert led the WNBA through its most significant period of expansion. The league credited her with helping secure a historic collective bargaining agreement, media-rights agreements, charter travel and expansion from 12 teams toward 18 by 2030. The new CBA sharply increases player compensation, including maximum salaries above $1 million. Engelbert said she had considered retirement for months and intended to leave at 62, adding that league was positioned for its next phase. She said no stakeholder pressured her to depart and that internal and external candidates will be considered during succession. Her tenure also faced criticism over player relationships, online harassment, safety concerns and cultural disputes. She plans to spend more time with family after leaving office.
