Anand, Carlsen, Sindarov, Divya headline GCL 2026 in Bengaluru: All you need to know

The fourth season of the Global Chess League commenced in Bengaluru at The Lalit Ashok, bringing elite international chess players to India for the franchise-based tournament. Five-time world champions Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand headline the star-studded roster, alongside top global contenders including Javokhir Sindarov and Alireza Firouzja. Six teams, featuring 36 players divided into Icon, Male Superstar, Female Superstar, and Prodigy categories, will compete in a double round-robin league phase followed by a best-of-two final. Matches are played under rapid time controls with a specialized scoring system that awards additional game points for wins with the black pieces to encourage aggressive play. Several prominent Indian grandmasters, such as D Gukesh, chose to skip the event to prepare for the upcoming FIDE Olympiad. Organizers expect high spectator turnout and enhanced fan engagement initiatives, maintaining the structural format established in previous editions across Dubai, London, and Mumbai.
