US diesel prices hit a record high, pushing up transportation costs for a long list of goods

PUBLISHED Sep 4, 2026, 2:34 PM ET

U.S. diesel prices reached a record $5.85 a gallon Friday, according to AAA, surpassing the previous nominal high set in 2022. The increase comes as disruptions tied to the U.S.-Iran conflict and attacks on Russian refineries tighten global supplies of refined fuels. Brent crude traded above $95 a barrel, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained far below normal levels, according to market reporting. Diesel’s role in trucking, rail, agriculture and construction means prolonged higher prices can raise operating costs beyond the fuel market. Amazon has already imposed a temporary 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on certain fulfillment fees, while parcel carriers have also adjusted fuel charges. Food prices could face additional pressure, although transportation is only one component of retail prices. EIA said elevated crude prices and refining margins are contributing to higher pump prices. Gasoline averaged about $4.15 a gallon Friday, also a record for Labor Day.
