Blue Origin Wins $700 Million NASA Contract to Build Mars Telecommunications Network

NASA awarded Blue Origin a firm-fixed-price contract worth up to $700 million to design, develop, integrate, launch, and operate the Mars Telecommunications Network. Under this agreement, Jeff Bezos' aerospace company must deliver a high-performance Mars communications orbiter to the agency no later than December 31, 2028. The spacecraft is scheduled to become fully operational at Mars by 2030. Built upon Blue Origin’s advanced Blue Ring platform, the orbiter will serve as a dedicated high-bandwidth relay system. It will transmit vital science data, high-definition imagery, navigation information, and mission communications between Earth and assets operating on or around the Martian surface. Managed by NASA's Space Communications and Navigation program, this critical infrastructure aims to replace aging orbiters and support upcoming robotic missions and crewed exploration precursor operations under the agency's overarching Moon to Mars strategy, thereby ensuring seamless interplanetary connectivity for upcoming generations of space explorers across the entire globe today.
