Suno Kills Controversial Mary J. Blige AI Ad
PUBLISHED Sep 3, 2026, 7:20 PM ET
Generative artificial intelligence music platform Suno has terminated a promotional advertising campaign featuring an unauthorized likeness of R&B icon Mary J. Blige. The 85-second video depicted the Grammy-winning singer endorsing an AI-generated track in a recording studio. According to company representatives, Suno initiated the campaign after believing it had contracted with a legitimate representative of the artist. The broker who negotiated the agreement lacked proper authorization from Blige. Representatives for the artist declined to comment on the incident. The advertisement drew widespread attention on social media platforms before being removed. This development coincides with broader legal scrutiny facing Suno regarding copyright compliance. Major record labels, including Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, have previously filed lawsuits against the technology company. Plaintiffs allege unauthorized utilization of copyrighted sound recordings to train generative audio models. Legal analysts note that unauthorized promotional usage highlights persistent regulatory challenges regarding digital media rights and celebrity endorsements.
