Defendant pleads not guilty in Charlie Kirk capital murder case
PUBLISHED Sep 2, 2026, 12:22 AM ET
Defendant Tyler Robinson pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in a Provo, Utah court to charges of capital murder in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Utah District Court Judge Tony Graf ruled that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to proceed with capital charges against the 23-year-old accused. Kirk, 31, was killed on September 10, 2025, during a debate event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Utah County prosecutor Ryan McBride alleged Robinson fired a sniper rifle from a nearby rooftop, endangering a crowd of over 3,000 attendees. Defense attorney Staci Visser argued that the single gunshot did not meet statutory criteria for aggravated murder under Utah law. Prosecutors cited text messages indicating ideological motives linked to Kirk's stance on LGBTQ+ rights, while defense counsel questioned that interpretation. Judge Graf set an October 23, 2026, hearing to schedule trial dates as the family seeks justice.
