Meta’s teen social media overhaul puts its safety promises to the test

Meta Platforms has agreed to a landmark seventeen billion dollar settlement with forty-seven U.S. states to resolve a major federal trial over youth social media addiction. Announced in Oakland, California, the agreement ends proceedings accusing the tech giant of intentionally designing Facebook and Instagram features to foster compulsive engagement among minors while concealing mental health risks. Under the terms, Meta will implement mandatory nationwide restrictions for users under eighteen, including a default two-hour daily time limit, overnight feed blocks from midnight to six in the morning, and the disabling of classroom notifications. The company will disburse funds over a ten-year period, with a portion contingent on whether rival platforms like TikTok and YouTube adopt comparable youth protection standards. Meta denied any liability or wrongdoing throughout the legal proceedings, stating the operational changes are designed to foster healthier digital habits. The proposed settlement remains subject to final court approval.
