Renowned American author, poet, and environmental activist Wendell Berry died on Monday at his home in Port Royal, Kentucky, at the age of 92. His daughter, Mary Berry, confirmed the passing of the prominent writer who spent decades championing small family farms, rural community preservation, and sustainable agriculture. Born in Henry County, Kentucky, Berry emerged as a distinctive cultural voice through his extensive collection of poetry, fiction, and essays that critiqued industrial agribusiness and modern mechanization. His seminal 1977 book, The Unsettling of America, cemented his status as a foundational thinker for the modern environmental and local food movements. Throughout his life, Berry practiced the agrarian principles he wrote about, farming his land using draft horses and rejecting many modern conveniences. In 2011, he received the National Humanities Medal. Memorial arrangements and tributes from literary and environmental communities nationwide continue to develop following the news of his death.
