Movie stars, timely documentaries and awards hopefuls convene at the Venice Film Festival

The 83rd Venice Film Festival opens Sept. 2 with Hollywood stars, awards contenders and politically focused documentaries competing for attention on the Lido. The festival’s 20-film main competition includes Danny Boyle’s Ink, Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, Florian Zeller’s Bunker and Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, while Alex Gibney’s 225-minute Musk screens out of competition on Sept. 9. A late addition, NAZA, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, will compete for the Golden Lion on Sept. 10 and is the only documentary in the main competition. The festival also faces criticism over gender representation: May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown is the sole female-directed competition entry. Venice4Palestine has separately urged organizers to take stronger action supporting Palestinians, while the festival canceled its traditional jury press conference. George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn are receiving lifetime achievement awards. The festival runs through Sept. 12, with several films expected to enter awards-season discussions this fall season.
