A pipeline leak in Iron County, Wisconsin, triggered local evacuations and prompted state regulators to demand an immediate halt to construction on the Line 5 reroute project. The incident occurred when an unoccupied semi-truck rolled into an excavation site in the Town of Saxon, striking the active pipeline. No injuries were reported, but air quality was monitored by hazardous materials teams as response crews worked to stabilize the area. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a stop-work letter citing concern over the spill and recent noncompliance events. Governor Tony Evers demanded transparency from Enbridge regarding the incident. The pipeline had already been the subject of intensive legal battles, including a 2019 lawsuit by the Bad River Band seeking its removal from tribal land. The proposed 41-mile reroute aims to relocate the infrastructure around the reservation boundary amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny and fierce opposition from environmental groups.
