A California judge has dismissed criminal charges against William Applegate, who was accused of stalking pop star Sabrina Carpenter, after ruling him mentally incompetent to stand trial. The decision was rendered during a mental competency hearing in a Hollywood courtroom, proceeding over the direct objections of city prosecutors. Applegate faced multiple charges, including stalking stemming from an August 2025 incident, alongside trespassing, disorderly conduct, and battery related to a separate May 2025 occurrence. Carpenter previously secured a restraining order in June after home security footage captured Applegate attempting to force open her front door. Court filings indicated the singer had no prior acquaintance with the defendant, whose behavior included delusional statements regarding national security. Legal experts noted that defendants found mentally incompetent are typically diverted into mental health evaluation and treatment frameworks rather than traditional punitive proceedings.
