China's Huawei, US PC maker HP sign multi-year Wi-Fi patent deal

PUBLISHED Aug 26, 2026, 1:33 AM ET

Huawei Technologies and HP Inc. have signed a multiyear cross-licensing agreement covering Wi-Fi patents, including Wi-Fi 7, the companies said Wednesday. The agreement gives HP access to certain Huawei patents while granting Huawei reciprocal access to HP patents. Financial terms and the scope of patents were not disclosed. HP described the arrangement as a routine standard-essential patent license and said it does not represent a strategic or commercial partnership with Huawei. The agreement follows a 2025 patent dispute in which Huawei sued HP over alleged unauthorized use of a Wi-Fi 6 patent. HP later joined the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool, gaining access to about 2,000 patents considered essential to the standard and ending litigation. Huawei said more than 1.6 billion electronic devices, excluding mobile phones, had used its Wi-Fi inventions by the end of 2025. The deal highlights Huawei’s continuing role in global wireless standards despite U.S. technology restrictions.
