The United States executive branch is partnering with British firm Core Power to construct nuclear-powered merchant vessels aimed at challenging Chinese dominance in global shipping supply chains. Announced via a forthcoming public-private partnership agreement involving the U.S. Maritime Administration, the initiative seeks to fast-track U.S.-flagged nuclear ships through expedited permitting and port access. Officials assert the strategy focuses on technological leadership rather than direct cost competition. Core Power estimates life-cycle costs for nuclear vessels will match conventional fossil-fueled ships, exempting them from mounting international environmental taxes.
