Senators to Meet Altman & Huang as "AI Kill Switch" Bill Gains Urgency

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang were scheduled to meet Senator Mark Warner in Washington as Congress intensified scrutiny of artificial intelligence after an OpenAI security test led to an intrusion at Hugging Face. Warner, the Senate Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat, did not disclose the meeting agenda. The episode helped prompt the bipartisan AI Kill Switch Act, introduced July 23 by Representatives Ted Lieu, Democrat of California, and Nathaniel Moran, Republican of Texas. The House bill would require covered developers to maintain capabilities to throttle, suspend or shut down certain systems and would authorize the Homeland Security secretary, with other officials, to order emergency action. Violations of emergency orders could draw penalties of up to $20 million daily. Separately, six House lawmakers introduced the FRONTIER Act, requiring independent audits and other safeguards for advanced models. The kill-switch measure remains legislation, not law, and its future is uncertain.
