Nevada Wildfire Forces 42,000 to Evacuate, Burns Out of Control Near Reno

A fast-moving wildfire near Reno, Nevada, forced about 42,000 residents into mandatory evacuation zones Sunday while another 45,000 were warned to prepare to leave. The Hawk Fire, reported Saturday near Hawk Meadow Trail northwest of Reno, expanded rapidly under strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation. Officials said Sunday night that it had burned more than 15,000 acres and remained zero percent contained. Six people, including three civilians and three first responders, were injured. Authorities said the fire was human-caused, but investigators had not determined whether it resulted from an accident or intentional action. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized National Guard resources, including helicopters and 60 personnel. Portions of U.S. 395 were closed, while thousands lost power. The University of Nevada, Reno, remained open Monday. Fire officials warned shifting winds could continue rapid, unpredictable growth as crews protect threatened neighborhoods nearby.
