President Donald Trump has again portrayed the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory, escalating an already tense dispute with Iran over the strategic waterway. On Sunday, Trump reposted a map on Truth Social labeling the strait “NEW U.S. Territory,” after saying Friday that he viewed it as American territory. He had first said Aug. 14 that he would declare the waterway U.S. territory after defeating Iran. Iran rejects the claim and says reopening depends on U.S. concessions, while maritime traffic remains sharply below prewar levels. Trump’s statements have not changed the strait’s established international legal status, and no formal U.S. annexation has been identified. The waterway normally carries a major share of global seaborne oil, making prolonged disruption a significant risk for U.S. fuel prices, shipping costs and inflation.
