California Chemical Tank Crisis Threatens 50,000 Near Disneyland

PUBLISHED Aug 23, 2026, 11:49 AM ET

A hazardous chemical storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, continues to threaten an explosion, with officials confirming a potential crack in the vessel. The tank contains an estimated 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a flammable industrial chemical. Orange County Fire Authority officials reported an expert team conducted a visual inspection late Saturday and identified a potential crack that may be relieving internal pressure. The tank's cooling system failed on Thursday, causing temperatures to rise dangerously. Authorities warn the vessel could fail at any moment, potentially triggering a catastrophic explosion that could cause severe damage within 335 meters of the facility. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Orange County on Saturday. Mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for approximately 50,000 residents near the facility. The Disneyland Resort, located approximately 8 kilometers from the facility, remains outside the evacuation zone and has not been directly affected. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin expressed cautious optimism that the most likely outcome would be a controlled small-scale release.
